Although I have read some pretty amazing stories, in my opinion some of the best stories are ones that are heard. I have always loved listening to podcasts, and I think that they are an absolutely amazing way to tell certain stories.
One of my all time favorite podcasts is This American Life, and recently I heard a striking yet sad story titled “The Runaways.”
This story is about teens in Long Island who continue to go missing, being labeled as “runaways” despite their parents telling authorities otherwise. Although the story was quite devastating, I remember being so intrigued the entire time. The way the story was told kept me not only entertained, but hooked.

What I liked best about the story was the fact that there was commentary by the narrator throughout, as well as the parents and those related to the teens sharing their stories as well. If something that could have been slightly confusing to the listener was said, the narrator was sure to fully explain in detail.
I think that these aspects of the story stuck with me because they jived so well together. The combination of the speakers, the narrator, background music and environmental noises at certain points helped to create an extremely vivid picture in my head.
If it were simply the journalist telling the story I think that it wouldn't have been as captivating. The use of all of these positive elements mentioned were vital in creating a successful story.
As a journalist, I can definitely learn from podcasts and use them as a multimedia tool to tell stories in a new, creative way. Positive story elements such as helpful commentary and use of multiple voices and sides to a story can really help journalists like me to captivate their audience.
